Japan’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and the head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Fumio Kishida, assumed office as the new Prime Minister on October 4th, 2021. He replaced Yoshihide Suga, the former head of the LDP who quit as PM after just one year, mostly due to his mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
