On Thursday (26/5/2022), Eni and Sonatrach signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost both gas exploration and the development of green hydrogen in the North African nation.
The MoU was signed during a state visit by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Rome, which followed some weeks after Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's visit to Algiers.
This comes as Europe is looking to wean itself off of Russian gas gradually, but no short-term gas supply alternatives are available, even from Algeria.
Despite that, Algeria is expected to play a role at least in the medium-term based on collaboration between ENI and Sonatrach.
