US talks with Iran over Iraqnote
Washington has agreed to allow US Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad to hold talks with Iranian officials over Iraq. Iranian sources expect Khalilzad to discuss a US-Iranian consensus on Iraq encouraged by the consensus he reached with Iran on Afghanistan. These sources speculate that he will try to arrange an Iraqi-Iranian agreement to fight terrorism, especially Al-Qaeda. He will also demand that Iran: control the land and maritime border with Iraq; withdraw Iranian intelligence officers from Iraq; hand over Al-Qaeda members caught on the border; and stop financing and arming Badr Organization, Hezbollah and Thar-Allah.
