Qatar Energy (QE) signed in June 2022 a deal with the Italian oil and gas company Eni for Qatar's North Field East (NFE) expansion project, the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.
In the wake of its major win in securing equity in this project, Eni has been asked to mediate between Chinese national oil companies (NOCs) and QE over possible NFE stakes for the Chinese companies.
Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi is said to have been asked by CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporation) to mediate with QE on behalf of both CNPC and Sinopec (China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation).
