On Monday (29/8/22), Iraqi Shia cleric and leader of the Sadrist Movement Muqtada Al-Sadr declared his resignation from politics; soon afterward, Baghdad witnessed unrest after his supporters entered the Green Zone and took over the presidential palace.
This came after Iraq faced a political deadlock following the parliamentary elections in October 2021, as Iraq's established political parties were unable to form a broad consensus government.
The current unrest has created uncertainty in Iraq’s future and role in the region, given especially that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi is finding difficulty in maintaining balance in the country due to the broad influence of Iran and Gulf countries in Iraq.
Tactical Report has prepared a 1571-word (5 pages) report to shed more light on Iraq’s current status and the future of its role in the region.
