Shiite sources close to Shiite leading cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani says he did not agree with Shiite leaders to mobilize a popular uprising against the British forces in Basra. He rather preferred to leave this matter to his delegates in the city to assess the situation and decide. According to these sources, the two Sistani’s delegates in Basra, Sayyed Imad Al-Battat and Sheikh Mohammad Falak Al-Maliki, are stepping up efforts to avoid an overwhelming explosion of the situation in the city in this period. However, they will not turn a blind eye to the British misuse of power. Both Al-Battat and Al-Maliki are in permanent contact with Shiite leaders in Basra to foil any popular uprising. They rather prefer to wait until a new government is formed. The Shiite Marja’iya wants to give PM-designate Nuri Al-Maliki all chances to succeed.
