Emir of Qatar in Washington next weeknote

Emir of Qatar
Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani is due to meet with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday
(July 9, 2019) at the White House.

His meeting with President Trump takes place at a time when Emir Tamim is concerned by several regional issues, including two main hot issues:

Iran, as President Trump is looking into the possibility of imposing a sea blockade on Iran

Libya, as President Trump is interested in discussing the situation there with him

The other issues concern the GCC crisis, Afghanistan, the “Deal
of the Century” and the Muslims Brotherhood.

On Iran, Emir Tamim is expected to express readiness to help forge a dialogue between President Trump and Iranian leaders.

Emir Tamim met with Iranian President Hasan Rouhani on the sidelines of last month's 5th Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and talked about the US-Iran situation.

However, it is believed that he would not be able to do too much as the Iranians insist that President Trump should go back on the US sanctions before establishing any US-Iran dialogue.

President Trump had talk with his Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin about the Iran issue on the sidelines of last week’s G20 summit meeting
in Osaka, Japan.

President Putin informed President Trump that he would not be mediating between the U.S. and Iran until certain conditions are met.

Meanwhile, Saudi
King Salman warned Washington against any secret dialogue with Iran
.

President Trump reassured Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad during their meeting in Osaka last week that “any step regarding Iran will be discussed with him”, and asked him to “convey his position to King Salman”.

This means, in principle, the Saudis should be informed of any Qatari mediation between Washington and Tehran.
